Domaine de spécialistes à l'origine, le genre s'est ensuite démocratisé sous le double effet de l'intérêt des journalistes et des firmes japonaises soucieuses de relancer les trails monocylindres en perte de vitesse. A défaut d'inverser la tendance, cette démocratisation a peut-être un peu édulcoré le concept. Légère et soignée Aussi fine que la culasse du moteur de 124,7 cm3, elle arbore des lignes très typées tout-terrain. Le trait est nerveux et l'ensemble est fin, aérien. Tout ici respire la légèreté. Et pour cause, avec 105 kg à sec revendiqués par l'usine italienne, cette Beta pèse une bonne quinzaine de kilos de moins que la Yamaha WR125X, le modèle plus populaire de la catégorie. On mesure ici l'écart entre une conception trail à la japonaise et la démarche des ingénieurs italiens fondée sur l'expérience de la compétition le cadre simple berceau dédoublé est réalisé en tubes d'acier de différentes sections suivant la rigidité souhaitée tandis que le bras oscillant est en aluminium. La finition des soudures est excellente et la chasse au gramme va jusqu'au choix d'un minuscule feu arrière à diodes presque invisible à l'extrémité du garde-boue arrière. Sur-équipée Mais c'est surtout l'équipement qui retient l'attention. A commencer par les suspensions. La fourche inversée Paioli de 41 mm de diamètre inspire autant confiance que l'amortisseur monté sur des biellettes en aluminium et nanti d'une belle bague de précontrainte du ressort. Le disque de frein Grimeca monté à l'avant impressionne avec ses 300 mm de diamètre et son épaisseur, le look racing de la découpe "wave" en plus. Il est pincé par un étrier 2 pistons. A l'arrière, l'ensemble constitué d'un disque de 220 mm et d'un étrier monopiston accroche moins le regard moins que le silencieux en aluminium à l'allure 100% cross. Des origines tout-terrain qui transpirent jusqu'aux poignées Domino et au large guidon Tommaselli. En revanche, les repose-pieds sont garnis de caoutchouc bien plus conciliant avec les semelles de vos chaussures de tous les jours que les crans destinés aux bottes renforcées. Étonnamment facile Un petit détail qui rappelle que notre 125 peut aussi être utilisée au quotidien. Certes, elle fait l'impasse sur les aspects pratiques et un porte-paquet en option serait bienvenu mais à l'usage, la Motard LC se distingue par sa conduite déconcertante de facilité. Alors que les SM sont en générale très haute de selle, l'assise de la Beta reste positionnée sous les 890 mm, 886 mm exactement. Elle est perchée 3 cm moins haut que celles de concurrentes voulues plus polyvalentes. Et comme elle est étroite, cette 125 se révèle finalement accessible aux pilotes de 1,70 m sans le moindre soucis. Sa légèreté, le bras de levier offert par son large guidon et son moteur très conciliant pour la cylindrée lui confèrent une prise en main instantanée. Légèrement dopée Le monocylindre 4 soupapes à refroidissement liquide placé au cœur de ce poids plume fait aujourd'hui référence dans la catégorie. Il a été développé conjointement pour la gamme Yamaha et pour les clients de motoriste italien Minarelli, filiale de la marque japonaise. Alors que la gamme asiatique reçoit une injection électronique, l'alimentation de la Beta est confiée à un carburateur Keihin de 30 mm de diamètre. Notre modèle est en plus nanti d'un silencieux qui l'est fort peu. La bande son est sympathique mais le volume sonore frise le tapage le limiteur de décibel n'est pas installé. En contrepartie, le moteur respire à pleins poumons et la différence est sensible à mi-régime où il semble nettement mieux rempli que son homologue Yamaha. Les 12,2 Nm de couple annoncés à 8 000 tr/min doivent culminer plus tôt. Diablement efficace... et joueuse ! Avec 7,4 s au 100 m départ arrêté, les 15 ch réglementaires doivent être accompagnés d'une paire de purs sangs supplémentaire. La vitesse de pointe en profite pour approcher les 115 km/h chrono dans des conditions optimales. De quoi creuser l'écart avec la concurrence qui plafonne à 105 - 106 km/h. Ces performances se payent côté consommation. Verdict de la pompe 4,3 l/100 km soit 10 % de plus que les autres machines équipées du même propulseur. Mais il faut reconnaître qu'on peine à rester sage au guidon. En plus d'être légère et facile, la partie-cycle est rigide et précise à l'attaque. Les 240 mm de débattement à l'avant et les 250 mm disponibles à l'arrière permettent de survoler n'importe quel trou et d'avaler les bosses les plus épaisses sans ruer. La Beta se place du regard et plonge d'instinct à la corde tout en laissant toujours au pilote la possibilité de corriger le tir. La monte de 110/80-17 et 130/70-17 signée Michelin offre un grip appréciable par temps sec et donne confiance sur chaussée humide. Ces dimensions sont parfaites pour la cylindrée grâce à un compromis précision/stabilité/vivacité au top. Le freinage nécessite un temps de rodage pour donner tout son potentiel. En règle générale, il ne faut pas hésiter à tire fort sur le levier droit pour obtenir toute la puissance. En contrepartie, elle arrive progressivement et avec un peu d'habitude, le dosage comme l'agrément sont d'un très bon niveau. La pédale commandant le dispositif arrière est en revanche moins facile à contrôler lorsqu'on chausse des bottes. Sous la pluie, le pneu bloque rapidement mais le contrôle de la glisse ne pose aucun problème... au contraire. En ville, le rayon de braquage de scooter et le poids de cyclomoteur se conjuguent avec le pilotage intuitif pour transformer les ruelles en terrain de jeu. Les six rapports de la boîte s'enchainent avec précision sur les boulevards pour taquiner de plus grosses cylindrées entre deux feux. Et pour finir, les suspensions à grand débattement doublée du freinage efficace permettent de nombreuses excentricités pas vraiment politiquement correctes mais tellement jouissives. Bref, à son guidon, on s'éclate matin, soir et week-end ! Un plaisir pas donné Enfin, pas trop longtemps tout de même. Car avec sa consommation aussi généreuse que les sensations qu'elle procure et un réservoir de 7,3 l., les nombreuses pauses station-services seront autant d'occasions de laisser refroidir votre esprit échauffé par son bouillant caractère et ses beaux atours. Un design et surtout un équipement qui flattent la rétine mais alourdissent sérieusement le budget. Haut de gamme, la Beta RR Motard LC l'est aussi par le tarif €, le prix de l'exclusivité. Au vu des performances générales, du plaisir qu'elle procure et du soin porté à sa fabrication, elle le justifie. Mais à ce prix, on aurait aimé un freinage plus mordant, un coupe-contact à la place de la béquille à rappel automatique, des rétroviseurs en accord avec le design et une paire de protège-mains.
